Wednesday 30th May 2007 saw the public launch of the Café Scientifique—Dartford website. The site, developed and sponsored by Cantium Scientific Limited, will provide the hub for all information regarding the Café Scientifique events in Dartford. Most importantly the site will be the home of the online discussion forum to enable debates on science to continue beyond the monthly meetings. Café Scientifique is a monthly gathering where anyone who is interested in science can listen to a talk by a leading expert and then join in an open discussion. Held in the Couture Café on the ground floor of the Nucleus, the atmosphere of the event is friendly and informal, and as Richard Wheeler, Development Director of START International said, it is a good opportunity for the audience to question a leading scientist on their own terms. As he explained: “The idea behind Café Scientifique is that it is entirely democratic; it is bringing scientists face to face with the public and paving the way for a lively debate. The gatherings are much more interactive than a conventional lecture and this seems to be the reason they are becoming so popular.” At other Café Scientifique events around the country, the audience pays for coffee and cake, but at Dartford all refreshments are sponsored by Cantium Scientific and ESC. As Steve Plumridge, Managing Director of Cantium Scientific said: “I have always been fascinated by science and it has given me a varied and interesting career, so I am delighted that Café Scientifique has arrived in Dartford. Through Café Scientifique we can share our enthusiasm for science and show that it can be accessible for everybody.” Dave Biggs of ESC agreed: “Until Café Scientifique started at the Nucleus I used to travel up to London for lectures at the Royal Institution and the RSA. The quality of the speakers at Café Scientifique and their willingness to engage with the audience has really impressed me so I am very happy to give the initiative my full support.” |
