The legacy of Second World War Unexploded
Bombs within the Thames Gateway

Thursday 24th January 2008, 6:45pm for 7:30pm.

At the height of the Blitz, the German bombers used the River Thames as a navigational aid to bomb London.  On their return from the sorties any unused bombs would be dropped over secondary targets along the banks of the river.  One of these targets was Joyce Green Hospital in Dartford.  Experts have calculated that approximately 10% of all bombs dropped failed to explode as designed.  Given the soft geology, many of these bombs penetrated to depths which could not be accessed by bomb disposal teams. Furthermore, the locations of many other unexploded bombs were never witnessed.  With the current focus on regenerating the Thames Gateway, there is the potential for construction work to encounter these dormant unexploded bombs.
