The First Event

Thursday, 19th April 2007 saw the first Café Scientifique meeting to be held in Dartford at the Couture Café, The Nucleus, The Bridge in Dartford.

Some salutary facts about medicines were on offer when the Head of Medway School of Pharmacy, Professor Clare Mackie gave a talk at the launch of Cafe Scientifique at The Nucleus based at The Bridge, Dartford.

The club whose members cover a broad span of science and technological industries were surprised to hear that in the UK ’s £7bn prescription industry, 10 per cent of prescriptions are never dispensed at the chemist. It was also pointed out that only 50 per cent of those issued with medication actually take them as prescribed. The largest group of drug users is the over 65’s who account for 50 per cent of all prescriptions issued. This percentage rises over 80.

Research in recent years has consistently shown that two thirds of patients want to be involved in the decision making process- they do not want the doctor to decide for them. However a little known fact estimates that 5700 people die from adverse reactions to drugs each year which is more than the annual UK road death total. The way forward is to communicate both risks and benefits and to let the individual decide.

Café Scientifique is an opportunity for adults from all backgrounds with an interest in science to attend a series of monthly talks in the informal setting at the café at The Nucleus. These meetings are thought-provoking with an opportunity to ask questions. Every session is free with light refreshments available from the café.
