Autobiography…
Dawn M Johnston RGN RM ADM DMS MSc LLM I commenced my General Nurse training in Dublin in 1980. The bright lights of London were attractive so worked in a private hospital in London with the intention of staying approx 6 months. I have still to return!! I completed my midwifery training in 1985 and spent 8 years working in Queen Charlottes Hospital in London. I worked in all areas of midwifery practice including the community (in the Shepherds Bush/Hammersmith district). My first management post was at Epsom Hospital. I was appointed Deputy General Manager/Senior Midwife at Medway Maritime Hospital in 1997 and was responsible for the commissioning of the new maternity unit on the Gillingham site and the smooth transfer of services to the new facilities from the All Saints Hospital site. My current role since 2001 is General Manager/Head of Midwifery for Women’s and Children’s Directorate at Darent Valley Hospital. Approx 3300 mothers are delivered here per year. In 2007 we opened a co located Midwifery Lead Unit for low risk mothers. I am an associate of the Health Care Commission and have been seconded to the Health Inspectorate Wales to advise on Midwifery issues. I also lecture at Greenwich University to undergraduate and post graduate students. Recently I completed LLM in Legal Aspects of medical practice and undertake expert witness work (largely relating to cases in Ireland). Finally I maintain my clinical skills as time permits and allocate one morning a week for clinical work. Click here for a link to Maternity & Obstetrics |
