What is Café Scientifique?
Café Scientifique is a free and open forum for debating science and technology issues. They are informal and accessible — much more so than a public lecture.
Who will be there?
Anybody with an interest in science and technology, but generally never have the opportunity to discuss their views with, and ask questions of, someone "in the know". No scientific knowledge is assumed by the speakers, so anyone can participate.
What happens at a Café Scientifique?
Cafés start with welcome refreshments and a chance to chat, followed by the presentation. The floor is then open to anyone who wishes to participate, either by raising a question or give their point of view.
When and Where?
These are normally held on the last Thursday of the month at The Nucleus, The Bridge, Dartford. For directions, click here.
What subjects will be discussed?
Anything relating to science and technology. Topics covered have included AIDS, the Big Bang, biodiversity, cancer, code-breaking, consciousness, Darwinism, ecology, evolution, extreme life, foetal experience, genetically modified organisms, global warming, infertility, nanotechnology, the Public Understanding of Science movement, sports science, superconductors and more. All Cafés Scientifiques welcome suggestions from the audience about their programmes. Do I need to buy a ticket?
No, the events are free and you can turn up on the night. However, some events may require pre-booking (full details can be found on the events page). Pre-booking does help us get the right amount of food and drink ready — these are free too!
Does Cafe Scientifique make a profit?
Café Scientifique does not make a profit from events; nor pay fees to speakers.
