Biography…

 

Prof Patricia Harvey, Director of Resources of the School of Science, University of Greenwich.

 

Patricia has a PhD in Plant Biochemistry from Durham University.  Patricia has been with the University of Greenwich since 1993 having previously spent ten years with Imperial College Department of Plant Chemistry after working for Genzyme Biochemicals in Maidstone, Kent as a product manager.

 

Patricia’s current fields of work include …

· Production of biodiesel from oilseed rape – a large SEEDA-funded project which involves 12 partners working towards developing a fully integrated approach to producing biodiesel from locally grown oilseed rape in Kent. The initiative involves local production of rapeseed, crushing, blending and distribution of a high quality biodiesel which is produced from a fully integrated locally based supply chain. The blueprint will be rolled out to benefit other similar projects around the UK.

· Bio-phytoremediation of contaminated land using a combination of white-rot fungi, composts and plants to treat organically-contaminated soil.

· The bio-delignification of wood and straw supported by the pulp and paper industry, the wood preservation industry and agriculture.

· In Europe, Patricia is UK delegate on the Management Committee of EU Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research (COST) Action 859: Phytotechnologies to promote sustainable land use management and improve food chain safety, which has 28 member countries.  As chairperson of one of the 4 working groups, her specific concern lies with improving the nutritional quality and safety of food crops .

 

 

Patricia is also working with…

· Biosciences Learning Zone at Kent Science Park –a consortium of FE and HE partners and Kent industries that aims to support the provision of training programmes for laboratory scientists in the region.

· ReMade Kent and Medway – helping with recycling projects managed in the region by ReMade Kent and Medway.

· Online Learning – developing bespoke online training programmes for customers in a range of subjects. For examples, short courses for healthcare professionals, Biomedical Online Learning visit w3.gre.ac.uk/biomed.

Biofuels: friends or foes?

Wednesday 30th May 2007 welcomed Prof. Pat Harvey to the Dartford Café Scientifique with a presentation and lively discussion on Biofuels.

The presentation was packed full of fascinating information and provided the platform for a lively discussion amongst audience.
